CODE 2014

by Sean Swanick

The annual CODE Fundraiser event took place at the Atwater Library and Computer Centre on a frosty 27th of November 2014. This is a philanthropic event celebrating the dedication and hard work of the Canadian NGO whose endeavours “support international programs encouraging development through education through support to libraries, professional development for teachers, as well as national and local book publishing in 20 languages.” The event, a social affair, had close to 50 guests attend. This year’s keynote speaker was Allen Leblanc, Director, Fund Development & Marketing of CODE. His presentation weaved between personal stories of his own visits to various sub-Saharan countries highlighting the tremendous work he and his colleagues do.

Adding to the friendly and spirited atmosphere of the evening was the much anticipated raffle draw which had roughly 20 prizes to give to lucky ticket holders. The gifts were in large part donations from local Montreal institutions and stores. This year also marked the return of Paragraphe Books and Dix Mille Villages; not only did they donate to the event, but they provided a comfortable opportunity for attendees to do some of their holiday shopping while enjoying a sociable evening. The Atwater Library was very gracious in support of the event, giving us a big discount on the room rental and doing their best to provide for our every need. The generosity of our donors and sponsors, as well as that of the attendees, made this year’s event spectacular for all.

We would like to make a special note of the continued support and encouragement of Mr. Mark Galler, and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for their generous leveraging of the events donations by a 3:1 ratio, as well as the ABQLA Executive and Board.  This year we were proud to raise $1,700.00, which was then leveraged to $5,100.

A warm thank you as well to this year’s CODE Fundraiser Organisers, Ed Bilodeau, Christine Jacobs, Christine Smith, Alisa Soukhodolskaia, and Linda Toivanen.

Save the date, you won’t want to miss the 2015 Holiday Dinner event!
