The annual fundraiser for CODE, at least in recent years, has become synonymous with warm company on cold nights. For a few years running, the event closely followed Montreal’s first significant snowfall of the season. On December 8, a hearty and animated group of professionals and students in the Montreal library world gathered to celebrate the season, connect with colleagues, and most importantly, raise money for CODE.

President's Message, Fall 2010

By Anne Wade

What interesting times that we live in. As I prepare to write this message I am reflecting on an article that I have just read from Maclean’s entitled From e-Books to No Books which discusses the migration of university libraries to the electronic format for materials. The Applied Engineering and Technology Library at University of Texas at San Antonio is used as an example of the world's first bookless library as It now offers access to 425,000 e-books and 18,000 e-journal subscriptions (Findley, 2010). Improved accessibility, simultaneous multiple users, greater flexibility for readers, especially those with special needs…it’s all good.

ABQLA Time Capsule

At a time when so many of us are taking an interest in our own genealogies (perhaps with the help of our local library), we know well the thrill – and fun – of finding yet another document that validates our particular history.  Such was the feeling elicited recently as regards the history of our own Association.  At a Board Meeting (27 October 2010), Janet Ilavsky reported coming across in the Archives the original Lettres patentes, complete with bright red seal, which incorporated our Association as a non-profit organization, dated 21 November 1946.
