Literacy Volunteers of Quebec Announces Fund to Help Adult Literacy Learners
Lac Brome, Quebec: Literacy Volunteers of Quebec launches the LVQ Student Solidarity Fund, a new initiative designed to facilitate participation in adult literacy programs offered by LVQ’s member organizations.
As Quebec celebrates adult learners during the 2010 edition of Quebec’s Adult Learner Week (Semaine québecoise des adultes en formation), it must not be overlooked that for many learners, it is difficult to participate in literacy programs because they have to pay for transportation, childcare, course materials, etc. The LVQ Student Solidarity Fund allocates $1,000 per year for distribution amongst adult learners enrolled in LVQ member community-based adult literacy programs to defray some of these associated costs. The goal of the LVQ Student Solidarity Fund is to provide financial assistance so a learner does not have to choose between going, or not going, to class.
In Quebec, 3,200,000 or 55% of Quebecers 16 years and older do not have the necessary literacy skills to function adequately in today’s knowledge-based economy. 1,300,000 Quebecers 16 years and older have serious difficulty reading and writing.
Literacy Volunteers of Quebec, established in 1980, is a provincial not-for-profit coalition that supports community, volunteer-based literacy groups through professional development, communication and advocacy for English literacy.
