Roch Carrier
Born in Sainte-Justine, Quebec, Roch Carrier has always followed his own path.
He obtained a B.A. from the Université Saint-Louis in Edmundston, N.B., a master's from the Université de Montréal, and a doctorat ès lettres from the Université de Paris. He has written many novels, short stories, plays, film and television scripts, essays, travel books and works of poetry. Several of his works have become classics and are used in schools and universities around the world, in both French and English. Among his many achievements and awards are: Officer of the Order of Canada, the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour and Director of the Canada Council for the Arts. In 1999, Roch Carrier became the National Librarian of Canada. He held this office until 2004 when the National Library and the National Archives of Canada became Library and Archives Canada. A further testament to his success is the library in his hometown named in his honour - the Roch Carrier Library.
