Public Libraries Section Report

Booktalking 3.0 Event

Written by Alisa Soukhodolskaia

On November 11, 2014, members of the library community met at the Atwater Library and Computer Centre for an event organized by the Public Libraries and Youth Sections of the ABQLA. The event, titled Booktalking 3.0, featured a talk by Melissa Tomecz, Readers’ Advisory Coordinator, and Valerie Medzalabanleth, Manager of Childrens’ Services, both at the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library. The two librarians presented a talk previously given at the OLA Super Conference on how to reach out to readers who are increasingly going online rather than into the library to find their “readers’ inspiration”. Using the examples of their own blogs, they showed how they make a connection with readers outside of the physical confines of the library and promote books via online book clubs, which can include polls and helpful links to the library’s catalogue. There were 24 people who attended the event.
